Shedding some light on batteries?
A lot of us take our car batteries for granted. We assume that when we turn the key in the ignition, the battery will power the starter motor and get our vehicle going.
What does your battery do?
- Quite a lot! A healthy battery brings the vehicle to life by getting it going in the first place.
- It supplies power to the starter motor which turns the engine over and powers the spark plugs or glow plugs that in turn ignite the fuel
- The alternator recharges the battery and maintains power once the vehicle is running.
What can go wrong?
The power of the battery is generally affected by how much work it has to do. So while the life expectancy of modern batteries is longer than in the past, the increase in modern vehicle technologies - Satellite Navigation, DVD's, mp3 music players, air conditioning - have all placed extra demands on vehicle batteries.
Don’t be a breakdown statistic
- 18% of AA breakdown calls were due to faulty batteries, making it the top reason for call outs, something the AA say can be greatly reduced by regular battery maintenance. (Source: The AA 2008)
